Origins and characteristics of the Irish cob

The Irish cob is a horse that was mainly bred by Travellers, Irish nomads who needed gentle, docile horses to pull their caravans. Many Irish farmers also used them for their farm work.

The Irish Cob is generally very robust, with well-developed muscles and medium-heavy bones. It’s best recognized by its dense, wavy mane and large dewlaps (stiff hairs above the hoof). Its head carriage is proud and its step light and powerful. Highly intelligent, this breed is becoming increasingly popular with the equestrian world…

It can be used for show jumping, power work and trail riding. Many Irish riding clubs offer you the chance to discover Ireland with this horse. A truly unforgettable experience!
