The RTÉ All-Ireland Drama Festival is an event held every year in the town of Athlone (County Westmeath). The festival celebrates street theatre there. A large number of performers take over Athlone, putting on shows for the crowds and offering workshops for the public!
The festival takes place every year in May. The programme is packed and runs for 9 days, with numerous shows and street entertainment for the whole family! The programme includes improv shows, games, plays… Anything goes when it comes to celebrating theatre!
It is best to have a good level of English to enjoy the festival. Nevertheless, some plays are occasionally wordless and based on universal understanding—an excellent way to include visitors who are less accustomed to speaking Shakespeare’s language too!
