History of Celtic Woman

A collective of singers determined to pay tribute to Ireland

It all began in 2004 when David Downes, an Irish composer, decided to compose for a collective of singers already performing on international stages.

At that time, David Downes was an Irish composer and musical director, recognized for his work with the show Riverdance.

He then had the idea to create a group that combines traditional Celtic music with elements of modern music.

To do this, he gathered a group of talented singers, each with experience in music or theater, to form the group.

The concept was to highlight Irish vocal and musical talent through performances that blend singing, music, and dance, in a style both traditional and contemporary.

He then contacted Lisa Kelly, Chloë Agnew, and Lisa Lambe, to whom he added the violinist, Máiréad Nesbitt.

Beginnings

Celtic Woman’s success was built gradually, thanks to a unique combination of talent, musical choices, and stage presentation. From the start, the group managed to reach audiences with its harmonious blend of traditional Irish music and contemporary styles, supported by high-level vocal and instrumental performances.

The group then gained popularity both in Ireland and internationally.

Their breakthrough was strengthened by numerous television appearances, notably during their special concerts broadcast on PBS in the United States.

These shows greatly contributed to their popularity, introducing them to a wide audience. Moreover, their international tours, featuring both visual and acoustic performances, consolidated their reputation and expanded their fan base.

The quality of their studio recordings, as well as the regular release of albums and DVDs, also played a crucial role in their sustained success.

Initially, the group consisted of Lisa Kelly, Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and violinist Máiréad Nesbitt. Over time, other artists such as Lynn Hilary, Alex Sharpe, Éabha McMahon, Mairéad Carlin, Tara McNeill, and more recently Muirgen O’Mahony and Emma Warren, have also been part of the group. The group’s composition has evolved, each artist bringing her unique touch to Celtic Woman’s music.
