A true giant of the international rock scene, U2 is a major Irish band that still unites crowds today. Deeply committed to political and humanitarian causes, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Junior have, over 20 years, achieved worldwide success surpassing the ambitions of their record labels. According to several sources, they are even one of the most downloaded bands in the world!
U2’s Career
Island Records signs U2 for a debut album
The band’s story begins in 1976, when four Dubliners decide to form a rock band. Dave Evans (later renamed The Edge), Adam Clayton, Paul Hewson (later Bono Vox, then Bono), answered the call. The band was initially named Feedback, then The Hype, and finally adopted the name U2, more in a spirit of communion with their audience than as a reference to the American spy plane, which according to legend was shot down in the Soviet Union on the day Bono was born.
Things quickly progressed, and the young Dubliners soon met Paul McGuinness, who agreed to become their manager. The goal was now to secure a contract and sign with a record label. Early attempts were major failures: record companies were unconvinced, including EMI representatives who left their concert mid-performance.
Their manager Paul McGuinness did not give up: he soon secured a contract with Island Records, which signed the band in 1980.
In October, their first album “Boy” was released. Their first single “I Will Follow” was a success, and the band embarked on a European and American tour. The band developed an increasingly special relationship with the audience: Bono involved the crowds, climbed on amplifiers, scaffolding, and brought people up on stage with him… His casualness and energy electrified the audience.
October 1981: U2 released their second album, “October”, followed in 1983 by “War”, which tackled major political issues and addressed the Northern Ireland conflict (“Sunday Bloody Sunday”). The success was immediate: number 1 on the UK charts, the album broke sales records worldwide.
The fourth album “The Unforgettable Fire” followed. During the tour, Bono continuously delivered messages on current political issues: the Strategic Defense Initiative project, the arms race, apartheid in South Africa, conflicts in El Salvador and Nicaragua… Bono’s engagement is notably one explanation for their success.
On the road to global success
On March 9, 1987, “The Joshua Tree” was released. “With Or Without You” became a global hit in the summer of ’87 and the album was certified platinum in the United States within 48 hours of its release. A record that crowned them as the greatest rock band on the international scene!
The following year, U2 released “Rattle and Hum” and then decided to focus on humanitarian projects (fight against AIDS, African debt, etc.).
Shortly after, they discovered the city of Berlin, which became a source of musical inspiration and gave birth to “Achtung Baby” in 1991. The band’s sound was radically different from their previous albums. The use of phasing on Bono’s voice and distortion effects on the drums marked a new evolution in their musical maturity: “The Fly is the sound of four guys sawing the Joshua Tree,” explained The Edge.
The Achtung Baby tour was called the Zoo TV Tour. Inspired by the power of the media demonstrated during the Gulf War, the show was fully interactive. Bono became a character in his own right: “The Fly.” He bitterly and caricaturally mocked influential figures of modern society.
Increasingly engaged albums and tours
In 1993, the band recorded the album “Zooropa”, which was rejected by the public and heavily criticized by reviewers. The Zooropa Tour saw the emergence of a new character played by Bono: McPhisto, a devilish double dressed in red and gold with horns. At the end of each concert, McPhisto would pick up the phone and call controversial personalities live. Among the most notable were Mussolini’s niece and Jean-Marie Le Pen…
In 1997, the album “Pop” was released, and U2 organized a tour exclusively in stadiums.
In 2000, the album “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” once again confirmed U2’s success with the public.
The band participated in 2003 in the 46664 live event to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday and his fight against AIDS in Africa. Bono also launched an awareness campaign for the DATA program, aiming to cancel African countries’ debts and facilitate medical processes in the fight against AIDS. Bono met George W. Bush, Jacques Chirac, and other politicians on this occasion to secure project funding. His involvement earned him the Legion of Honor and brought him close to winning the Nobel Prize.
In 2004, U2 released “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb”, which once again enjoyed real public enthusiasm, with the hit song “Vertigo.”
In 2009, U2 released a new album, highly anticipated but with mixed success: “No Line on the Horizon”; the tracks were less rock and more mainstream. Nevertheless, the band’s original signature was still felt, and fans flocked to stadiums and concert halls to see them…
With about ten albums to their name, U2 remains today an emblematic band of current rock. And there’s no doubt: they still have good times ahead!
