Boyle Abbey is one of the most impressive Cistercian monasteries in the county of Roscommon. Incredibly well-preserved, it was built in the 12th century by the MacDermott family, and remains one of Ireland’s finest abbeys to this day. If you’re ever in County Roscommon, Boyle Abbey is a must-see!
Boyle Abbey is currently undergoing renovation work, which has the advantage of giving you free entry to the monastery. (Outside the construction period, admission costs €2.10 per person).
Guided tours are then scheduled, and you’ll discover the history of the Abbey through a beautiful exhibition inside the Abbey walls.
Here, you’ll learn about the history of its founders, the MacDermotts, the family who ruled County Roscommon at the time. You’ll also discover the abbey’s military past, when it was converted from the 17th to the 18th century into accommodation for military garrisons.
Your guide will then take you on a tour of the building, showing you its architecture, its ancient gardens, and its walls pierced by impressive arches and vaults. Take a stroll through its corridors, touch its stones and admire the finesse of its medieval architecture: you won’t be disappointed!
It has to be said that the abbey is charged with a charm found nowhere else. The perfectly preserved state of the building allows us to plunge into the heart of Ireland’s medieval and religious past.
The guide will take you through a large open corridor, surrounded by imposing stone columns. This walkway will take you right through Boyle Abbey to the ruined main tower guarding the entrance to the monastery.
