In Cork, this former prison island opens after dark for Halloween

With Conviction, Spike Island combines its prison history with an adults-only after-dark experience.

There are settings no staging needs to invent. An island in the middle of Cork Harbour, a fort, the corridors of a former prison: Spike Island already has the makings of an unsettling tale. For Halloween 2026, the site offers a chance to discover a different atmosphere after dark, before a show in which mentalism and escape artistry take over from history.

An evening behind the scenes of the prison island

Heritage before illusion

The Spike Island After Dark: Conviction experience begins with a guided tour of parts of the former prison and its underground tunnels. According to the organiser, some of these spaces are rarely explored after dark. The tour draws on the site’s past before leading visitors to the show.

Located off Cobh, Spike Island has served, among other things, as a military fortress and a prison. This history is what gives the place its power: behind the idea of a Halloween outing lies a real heritage, with its buildings, their uses and the lives lived there. The show adds to it; it does not replace that memory.

Conviction, a show created for October

Dean Jacob takes the stage

Mentalist and escape artist Dean Jacob presents a new show for 2026, combining illusions and suspense. It is scheduled throughout October until the 31st, with dates and times to choose from via the ticket office. This does not mean that a performance takes place every evening.

The promise of chills here is part of the staging. It does not constitute proof of paranormal activity on the island. That is precisely the appeal of this offering: playing with a history-laden setting without having to present its effects as unexplained phenomena.

What to know before booking

An experience strictly for adults

The ticket office requires attendees to be over 18 and to bring identification. It also states that anyone who is intoxicated will be refused entry. This evening should therefore not be confused with the family Halloween activities offered separately by Spike Island.

The advertised price, including fees

When checked on 15 October, the ticket was listed at €42.50, plus a €1.95 booking fee, making €44.45 in total. Remaining tickets and ferry times should be checked for the chosen performance: do not automatically apply information from a standard daytime visit.

For a stay in Cork, the idea has the advantage of a distinctive setting: leaving the streets of Cobh behind to reach an island whose history alone is enough to create a sense of anticipation. The rest is in the hands of the guides, the show — and whatever each person is willing to leave to their imagination.
