Descending into the depths of the earth, the Arigna mines are among the narrowest and largest coal mines in Europe! Located in the county of Roscommon, this mine has a museum that will introduce you to the history of coal mining in Ireland! A guided tour of the mine is also on the agenda!

The Arigna Minning Experience – James McNamara – cc
The Arigna Mining Experience is an easy-to-find museum with its modern, deliberately crooked building that seems to blend into the ground…
At the museum, you can discover over 300 years of Arigna mine history. An exhibition will explain the geology of the area, as well as how peat is extracted using traditional methods handed down over the centuries.
But there’s more to the museum than just exhibits and explanations! You can also plunge into the heart of the old mine galleries and explore a small section of them! Sound effects, mood lighting, demonstrations of mining techniques and a briefing on safety measures are all part of your excursion into the belly of the Earth!
In short, an excellent guided tour that’s a welcome change from traditional museums!
