Creggandevesky - heagney

Creggandevesky is a prehistoric tomb, located 5km from Pomeroy in County Tyrone. Set on a hillock, the edifice boasts a breathtaking view over Lough Neagh, and was only discovered in the 1960s… Since then, the site has become widely known, and a favorite with visitors!

History of Creggandevesky

A tomb once hidden by peat bogs

The discovery of Creggandevesky is rather recent: the tomb was once covered by a thick layer of peat, and was only discovered in 1960, and excavated between 1979 and 1982. Archaeologists dated its construction to the Neolithic period, and uncovered the building’s trapezoidal shape (rather atypical for the region).

Researchers also explored the 3 burial chambers, where they discovered the cremated bones of over 21 individuals, as well as pottery shards, a flint arrowhead, scrapers and a necklace of 112 stone beads.

Today, the site is essentially a tourist attraction, attracting many visitors with a taste for megaliths…

An atypically-shaped cairn dating from the Neolithic period…

Creggandevesky is free to visit. You can then discover its curious trapezoidal shape. The cairn is 18 metres long and 13 metres wide, tapering to 6.5 metres at the rear. At the front, its curved shape creates the impression of a central courtyard, dominated by an imposing dolmen, which provides access to the burial chambers.

The building is also crossed by 22-metre granite blocks, lying along its central line. Finally, the cairn is covered with several tons of dry stone, ensuring that the structure is watertight…

The site is quite impressive, both in terms of its size and its strange shape. A must-see tourist site if you’re in the area!
