Lough Boora is an Irish peat bog, classified as a “nature reserve”. Located in County Offaly, it offers visitors a wealth of signposted walking trails. An interesting place to discover an old peat extraction site, as well as some pretty lakes nearby!
Lough Boora is a peat bog offering magnificent views of Irish wildlife. Its geological situation has made it a particularly rich ecosystem, appreciated by locals not only for the quality of its peat, but also for its beauty and historical appeal.
It has to be said that the site was once a major centre for the extraction of peat, the organic fuel so dear to the Irish. Exploited from 1950 to 1970, the peat bog has now become an eco-tourism site: its resources are no longer exploited, only tourism!
In addition, the site has been revealed to hold archaeological remains of great importance. Researchers have discovered stone axe heads, arrowheads and blades, all dating back to prehistoric times. (Explanatory panels on the site allude to this).
As far as visits are concerned, the site is rather interesting. You can explore the reserve on foot, or rent bicycles on site. Along the way, you’ll come across some amazing landscapes, with marshes, reeds, artistic sculptures and industrial equipment abandoned by former local extractors. Not to mention the discovery of exceptional flora and fauna, where it’s not surprising to come across a few wild ducks, or some fascinating carnivorous plants!
During your walk, don’t miss a visit to 2 small lakes within the reserve itself. You can fish there if you have purchased a fishing permit.
