Built in the 18th century, King House takes its name from the King family, an influential lineage in Ireland, who were originally sent by the King of England in 1603 to subdue the local Irish.

The house was built in 1730 for Sir Henry King, 1st Baronet of Boyle, marking his status and prosperity.

Prestige in the barracks

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the house played a central role in the social and political life of the region. However, with the decline of aristocratic fortunes and social changes in Ireland, King House was requisitioned for use as barracks by the British army.

It was home to the famous Connaught Rangers regiment in the early 19th century, becoming an important military center until Irish independence.

Cultural renaissance

After Irish independence, King House went through a period of neglect before being rediscovered as a national treasure. Thanks to the efforts of the local community and Roscommon County Council, it was carefully restored in the 1980s and 1990s. The restoration process aimed to preserve its historic architecture while transforming it into a dynamic public space.
