In Ireland, clichés about redheads die hard… And there are still plenty of preconceived ideas! In honor of National Red Hair Day in Ireland, here are 10 unusual facts you need to know about this gorgeous hair color. All you need to shine in society!

Some surprising facts about red hair

1. One Irish person in ten has red hair

Gone are the clichés about Irish people all having red hair!

This hair color is quite rare, and is thought to affect only 500,000 Irish people in the whole country!

A figure that puts Ireland well behind Scotland: the Emerald Isle has 10% redheads, compared with 13% in Scotland.

So, forget the image of Irish children frolicking proudly on the moors, red hair blowing in the wind. It’s a real caricature, and Irish people are far from being customers!

2. Red hair has been demonized throughout history

It’s a well-known fact: throughout history, people with red hair have often been accused of witchcraft or pacts with the Devil. It has to be said that this color was so rare in some countries, that it quickly aroused fear and the wildest theories.

Some redheads have been burned at the stake for it. An unjust and atrocious sentence, which fortunately no longer exists today.

3. Red hair and blue eyes: the rarest combination in the world!

Even rarer than red hair itself: the combination of blue eyes and red hair is said to be one of the most unique combinations in the world! An extremely rare biological phenomenon, but a truly magnificent one!

Scientists estimate that there are fewer than a million people with this combination… redheads are more likely to have green or hazel eyes.

4. Red hair doesn’t turn grey as it ages

Now that’s ultra cool. While people with blond and brown hair inevitably experience “graying” as they age, you should know that this is not the case for redheads.

Over time, their hair goes straight to white. Forget grey: redheads age much more beautifully than others! And we clearly envy them for it!

5. Redheads produce their own vitamin D

Amazing, but true. Most redheads have particularly fair skin, and a low concentration of melanin in their bodies.

This can lead to problems of deficiency…

But redheads have superpowers: to compensate for this inconvenience, their bodies are able to produce their own vitamin D.

An amazing, downright cool phenomenon.

6. Redheads come from all ethnic groups

It’s not just in Ireland and Scotland that the population has individuals with red hair. Most ethnic groups have this peculiarity: Jamaicans, Asians and Africans have already recorded members of their ethnic groups with flamboyant hair!

The rendering is magnificent every time!

7. Both parents must carry the red gene to pass it on to their baby.

Freckles are a declining attribute. There are fewer and fewer redheads… and that’s because it’s difficult to pass on to future generations. In fact, the gene that produces red hair is recessive.

To transmit it, both parents must carry the gene.

8. Red hair is thicker than other colors

It’s not just the color that sets redheads apart. Their hair strands are denser and thicker than other hair colors! This means that redheads have less hair, but more density!
