Kathleen Hemmings, a 104-year-old Englishwoman, recently created a buzz in Ireland by sharing her secret for a long and fulfilling life. And his advice can be summed up in one sentence: “Drink Guinness, and never get married”. Funny, rock’n’roll recommendations that put a smile on everyone’s face!

When an Englishwoman promotes Guinness

Born on October 2, 1919 in Brixton, Kathleen Hemmings led a life in which she never stopped biting into life. Among other things, she worked as an accountant and spent her evenings dancing at Covent Garden and attending ballets and operas at the Royal Opera House.

During the Second World War, she lived in London before moving to the Cotswolds in 1965, then to Cheltenham with her family.

To celebrate her 104th birthday at Care UK’s Sandfields retirement home, a grand event was held in her honor, complete with birthday cake and… Guinness galore.

The local press was invited to attend. And when asked by a journalist for her secret to a long life, Kathleen doesn’t lack aplomb:

Drinking Guinness and not getting married!

A quirky, wacky statement that advocates a free, no-strings-attached life… and a proven taste for Ireland’s most famous dark beer!

And it’s not the first time we’ve heard such advice. Centenarian sisters living in Ireland had already declared that a pint of Guinness would be the source of their longevity and good health…

Although the science in no way proves the alleged powers of Guinness on old age, it’s a boon for the Diageo group (which owns the Irish stout), which has been riding the “Guinness i Good for You!” slogan for years.

It’s worth noting, however, that Guinness should be consumed in moderation… if our dear Kathleen Hemmings has anything to say about it.
