It’s a rare event: this morning, many Dubliners were able to witness a whale calmly evolving in Dublin’s waters! The 13-meter-long animal is believed to have been lost in the Liffey, the river that flows through the Irish capital, and was caught swimming near the city’s docks.

Whale lost in Dublin

A rescue team guided the animal into the Irish Sea

This impromptu visit was surely accidental. According to the researchers, the absence of the usual city noises during this period of confinement may have contributed to the whale’s arrival.

A team of firefighters and veterinary surgeons immediately intervened to guide the whale back into the sea. A manoeuvre that required more than 5 hours of effort and extensive logistics! Boats, nets, food to bait him… The task was tough, but the measures deployed were rewarded: the whale eventually returned to the wild waters of the Irish Sea.

In good health, the whale should be able to rejoin its fellow whales in the coming days.
