Cinema: discover the incredible first images of Kenneth Branagh as Boris Johnson
This England

The much-anticipated series “This England” has just unveiled its first images. They show an unrecognizable Kenneth Branagh, literally transformed into Boris Johnson. And the resemblance is more than striking. The 5-episode mini-series is due to air on September 21 in the UK, and focuses on the British Prime Minister’s first months in office, during the early days of the pandemic…

Stunning first images

Northern Irish actor Kenneth Branagh literally surprised everyone with his portrayal of Boris Johnson

The brand-new teaser for “This is England” has kicked viewer anticipation up a notch. The first images from the mini-series show a more than convincing Boris Johnson. Kenneth Branagh plays a more-than-convincing Prime Minister, confronting the controversies of the Brexit (which have heavily impacted Ireland and Northern Ireland).

It also takes a behind-the-scenes look at his calamitous management of the first months of Covid-19.

Chaotic and controversial times, which had literally divided Britain over its decisions.

This is England is a mini-series directed by Michael Winterbottom. It reunites not only Kenneth Branagh, but also Ophelia Lovibond, who plays Carrie Johnson, and Andrew Buchan, who plays her Secretary of State for Health, Matt Hancock.

The series will be broadcast on Sky Atlantic and the NOW streaming service from September 21.

No broadcast date has yet been announced in France. However, broadcasting rights for the series have been acquired in no fewer than 88 countries. No doubt the show will be coming to our screens soon too.

In the meantime, you can still discover the first images from the series. It features Boris Johnson, with voice-overs evoking the pandemic, the country’s lockdown, as well as an evocation of Dominic Cummings’ controversial trip from London to Durham, which he made in the midst of the national lockdown in March 2020 while showing symptoms of Covid-19.

The images also feature stories from the whole country… We see doctors and nurses working heroically with coronavirus patients. We discover the British whose lives have been literally turned upside down…

It promises to be a solid, serious series from a giant of the cinema. Kenneth Branagh is a BAFTA and Oscar winner.
