It’s undoubtedly one of this year’s most eagerly awaited films! The film “The Rising”, entirely dedicated to Dublin’s 1916Easter Rising, will hit cinemas by late 2016/early 2017.

Easter Inssurection: what’s it all about?

The Easter Rising was a decisive event in Irish history. It’s about an event that took place in Dublin in 1916. The town, then occupied by the British, was the scene of a violent uprising, organized in secret by Irish nationalists. The latter then set about occupying strategic buildings in the capital, with a view to fighting British rule. The confrontations were terribly deadly, resulting in a crushing defeat… and the death of the main leaders of the Insurrection.

The Rising” promises to reach new heights! It will focus mainly on Seán MacDiarmada, one of Ireland’s nationalist republican leaders, who helped organize the uprising against the British.

The film’s director, Kevin McCann, has assembled a prestigious cast to tell the story of the famous event that changed the course of Irish history. It brings together some of the biggest names in cinema, including :

Deeply committed to this project, Kevin McCann made it a point of honor to be as faithful as possible to the story of the Insurrection. His aim was to make a film that would pay tribute to the nationalist heroes of the time:

As an Irish filmmaker, I’ve always been interested in issues of identity, history and faith. With this film, we want to awaken the Irish people and change the way they look at their history. The Rising is the story of a hero fighting for his people’s freedom. Along with other heroes, Seán MacDiarmada fought for a new republic, a rebirth of the spirit of the Irish people and an end to a servile, English-slave mindset. It was our duty, 100 years on, to tell the story of a major political event in recent Irish history…

The film will trace the story of the 7 leaders of the Easter Rising, from the organization of the event to their summary execution by the British after the uprising failed. A very intense film, whose release date echoes the anniversary of the Insurrection: this year, this historic episode celebrates its 100th anniversary!

The Rising is therefore an excellent way of raising awareness of Ireland’s troubled history among the Irish people and the rest of the world. It also puts the spotlight on one of cinema’s least-represented leaders: Sean Mac Diarmada.

Goodbye dear brothers and sisters. Don’t weep for me. Pray for my soul and be proud of my death. I die so that the Irish nation may live. God bless you, protect you, and may He have mercy on my soul.

Sean Mac Diarmada, last letter to his family. 1916

Let’s be patient before we see it in theatres!
