Cinema: when Meryl Streep becomes The Iron Lady
Meryl Streep campe le rôle de Margareth Thatcher dans "La Dame de Fer"

In February, don’t miss the chance to meet Meryl Streep, for her new film “The Iron Lady”. The actress plays the role of Margaret Thatcher, a leading political figure of the last century. She was the first and only woman to be Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (from 1979 to 1990). Nicknamed “The Iron Lady”, she led her government with severity, notably refusing to intercede on behalf of the hunger strikers in Northern Ireland, leaving Bobby Sands and other IRA members to succumb to their fast.

The film retraces the career of this strong-willed woman. In her 80s, she recalls her life, her setbacks and her successes. From her early days to her arrival at 10 Downing Street, Thatcher recalls her struggles to establish herself as a woman, enduring betrayals, failures and successes.

The film is an interesting portrait of a woman who was once both adored and hated by the UK and the rest of the world. However, the film’s release in the UK was controversial, to say the least.
Current Prime Minister David Cameron himself criticized the film for focusing its attention on Thatcher’s old age and current illness, rather than highlighting her political actions: “I can’t help thinking, why does this film have to be released now? It’s really a film more about age and dementia than the actions of an extraordinary ex-prime minister.
However, David Cameron acknowledged Meryl Streep’s performance: “The actress’s performance is excellent, bluffing. Meryl Streep is fantastic in this film.

So “The Iron Lady” is a film that is, to say the least, controversial. Find out more on February 15, when it opens in French cinemas. We look forward to hearing from you!
