Climate change is accelerating the erosion of the Irish coastline. This is according to Coastwatch Europe, an organization specializing in the monitoring of Europe’s coastal environments.
According to their study, the increasingly changeable climate is multiplying storms on the Irish coastal front. These storms are likely to cause erosion of the coastline, resulting in extensive damage and rising water levels in the vicinity of nearby homes.
According to Karin Dubsky, marine ecologist and co-founder of Coastwatch Europe, the risk of “shrinking coastlines” is growing for the Emerald Isle. An alarming finding, which the organization believes calls for immediate action.
In some areas, we have suffered massive dune losses, such as around the Kilmichael and Brittas Bay dunes. Houses on the coastal bangs are potentially at risk in the long term.
Without being alarmist, the study shows that Ireland is simply “shrinking”. An observation she says is shared by many Irish people living on the coast.
To limit the impact of climate change, Coastwatch Europe advises homeowners to take the necessary steps to protect their property from damage, and recommends that the entire Irish population adopt eco-responsible behavior.
We need to protect the environment with alternative methods… Review your lifestyle and make concessions. Starting with alternative modes of transport such as electric cars, bicycles and public transport. Insulating your home can also reduce your energy consumption. Finally, renewable energies are recommended, such as solar panels, wind turbines, etc.
As a reminder, Ireland declared astate of climate emergency earlier this month. This status should enable the government to mobilize large-scale resources to act in favor of the planet.
