Taoiseach Micheál Martin (Irish Prime Minister) announced this evening in an official speech that most Covid-19 restrictions will be lifted starting tomorrow morning, Saturday, January 22 at 6:00 AM. This announcement sparked a wave of joy and hope across the entire country. Ireland is now ready to return to normal life and turn the page on Covid-19!

What Will Change in Ireland

Restrictions Lifted Starting Tomorrow at 6:00 AM

It took over two years to reach this decision, but it is now official. From tomorrow, Irish pubs and restaurants will be able to open with normal operating hours. No more curfews or distancing between tables. It will also be possible to sit at tables with more than 6 people!

The health pass is abandoned: no need to show it to enter pubs or nightclubs.

Nightclubs and other venues will also be allowed to resume their activities as before.

Likewise, the government is removing the limit on the number of people gathering in one household. Irish families can now have gatherings with more than 6 people!

Starting Monday, companies will gradually welcome back employees who were working remotely.

Covid-19 Measures That Remain

While many measures are being dropped, some will remain in place until February 28 before being fully removed (if the situation allows). The Irish government aims for a gradual return to normal and keeps some essential rules to maintain control.

Here’s what remains:

  • The health pass is still required for travel within and outside Ireland, along with filling out the Passenger Locator Form. More information on travel conditions here.
  • Masks must be worn in regulated places, daycare centers, nurseries, schools, supermarkets, and public transport.
  • Basic hygiene measures must continue to be observed.

Optimism is in the Air in Ireland

The Prime Minister’s announcement brought a wave of joy across the country. Mr. Martin expressed his pride:

Today is a good day. We have overcome Omicron. Spring is coming, and this is the first time I’m this excited. Vaccination is key, the evidence is clear. Please, if you haven’t already, get vaccinated and receive your booster.

However, the Prime Minister stressed that this lifting of restrictions is just a first step. For him, it does not mean the pandemic is over, and caution is still needed:

The pandemic is not over yet, and we must all remain vigilant. It is also important to say that I cannot promise there won’t be further developments in the future.
