Colin James Farrell was born on May 31, 1976 in Castlenock (Caisleán Cnucha), a town 8km from Dublin in the east of the county of the same name.)

Colin was the youngest of four children, including a brother and two sisters. He grew up sharing a common passion with members of his family: soccer (his father and uncle were both professional footballers).

For a long time, he envisaged a career in the sport. His adolescence was rather difficult at the time. He suffered his parents’ divorce as a child… He soon encountered difficulties at school, and was expelled several times. (Colin fought constantly, smoked and drank).

It was at this point that Farrell began to experiment with drugs. He tries ecstasy and feels the perpetual need to push his limits.

A new beginning

In 1993, Colin Farrell was already looking good. At the age of 17, he decided to leave Ireland and spend a year in Sydney. He did some modeling… then decided to turn to acting.

He then returned to Dublin, did a few photo shoots, multiplied castings, tried his hand at country dancing…and finally entered the prestigious Gaiety Drama School, which he left prematurely after 6 months.

But this didn’t stop her from gradually launching her career with a few small appearances between 1996 and 1997 in TV series such as Ballykissangel, Falling for a Dancer and Love in the 21st Century.

Then, in 1999, he was selected to star in The War Zone, Tim Roth’s first feature film. A project that opened new doors for him…

He was then offered a small role alongside Kevin Spacey in the film Ordinary Decent Criminal, the latter having spotted him while attending a play in London (Little World of Our Own) in which Colin played the role of an autistic child.

After that, one thing led to another. In 2001, he directed a casting video for Tigerland and won the role of soldier Bozz. He was then awarded the B.C.F.S. (Boston Critics Film Society) prize in the “Best Actor” category.

He then moved to Los Angeles, where he made a string of successful films. Colin Farrell has attracted the attention of many directors, including Steven Spielberg, Joel Schumacher, Oliver Stone and Woody Allen.

However, success can be a rollercoaster ride. Colin Farrell’s film choices sometimes suffer the wrath of the critics. He was especially criticized for his portrayal of Alexander the Great, even though he was directed by Oliver Stone.

But nothing seems to stop the Irish actor: he suffers a number of setbacks, but nonetheless enjoys some flamboyant successes, including Miami Vice, Bons baisers de Bruges, Total Recall and Les Animaux Fantastiques…

In the meantime, the actor became aware of his drug problems. He went into rehab after his film Miami Vice and came back in top form.

He then pursued his big-screen projects, but once again alternated between good reviews and more mixed films.

Recently, however, he created quite a buzz when he decided to play The Penguin in the Batman saga. Completely unrecognizable, he has succeeded in painting a portrait full of complexity, where it’s hard to even identify his actor’s features. A performance that propelled him back into the limelight.

As the icing on the cake, in 2023 he received a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy, playing in The Banshee of Inisherin.
