After graduating from Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand, Neill returned to Northern Ireland to work in his father’s winery. However, Neill soon realized that his true passion lay elsewhere, and decided to pursue an acting career.
Sam Neill’s acting career began in the late 1970s, when he landed his first major role in the New Zealand film “Sleeping Dogs”.
The film was a big hit with critics and helped establish Sam Neill as one of the region’s most promising young actors. Confident in his choices, Neill continued to work in the New Zealand film industry throughout the 1980s, appearing in a number of successful films, including “My Brilliant Career” and “The Piano”.

Frustrated by his lack of success in Hollywood, Sam Neill decided to return to New Zealand in the late 1980s. It was there that he landed the role that would change his life: that of Dr Alan Grant in the hit film“Jurassic Park“.
The film was a huge success, propelling Sam Neill to the forefront of Hollywood acting. He is now inundated with offers, and one role after another. He then starred in “The Man Who Whispered in Horses’ Ears” and “The Dish”.
Aware of the need to diversify, he also decided to work for television, appearing in critically acclaimed series such as The Tudors and Peaky Blinders.
In recent years, he has appeared in a number of critically acclaimed films, including “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” and “Thor: Ragnarok”.
Sam Neill’s work as an actor has been recognized with a number of awards and honors. In 1994, he received the Australian Film Institute’s Best Actor Award for his role in “The Piano”. He was also recognized for his work in television, winning a Golden Globe for his role in the mini-series “Reilly, Ace of Spies”.
In addition to his acting awards, Neill has also been recognized for his work as an environmental activist. In 2001, he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to environmental protection and the film industry.
Despite his busy schedule, Neill has always found time for philanthropy. He is a convinced environmentalist and has worked alongside a number of charities to promote environmental preservation. He is patron of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand and has also worked with the World Wide Fund for Nature.
