There are many legends set in Ireland, but nothing can take away the romantic charm of the legend of Tristan and Isolde! In many ways, this story resembles the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Look at it this way: impossible love, rivalries and power struggles combine to make the perfect story!
The original legend is quite complex, and has been retold and rewritten many times over the centuries. Nevertheless, whatever the version, the story is always the same, and follows the same basic principles: Tristan is a knight who falls madly in love with the Irish princess Iseult, then promised to King Mark of Cornwall. The two decide to flee, to live out their love in the open, where no one will ever recognize them.
Nevertheless, their escape is fraught with difficulties, including chases, intrigue, manipulation and confrontations with mystical creatures, including a dragon.
Tristan eventually died of poisoning, and Isolde died a few days later of grief. Both were buried side by side…
Legend has it that a hazelnut tree and a honeysuckle grew on their grave, joining in places: the symbol of true love!
The legend of Tristan and Isolde has circumnavigated the globe. It’s got all the great themes of Greek tragedy, but with 100% Celtic charm!
Admittedly, the original writings are sometimes not very accessible (the turns of phrase are sometimes difficult), but there are many books that attempt to present a simplified, more up-to-date version of the original plot…
Magic, love, knightly combat: you’ll quickly fall under the spell of the legend!
