Brooklyn is a film adapted from the novel by Colm Toibin. It tells the story of Ellis, an Irish girl who leaves her native Ireland for America. Although the initial story may seem light-hearted and far-fetched, the film pulls it off brilliantly, and richly deserves its Oscar nominations! There’s no mawkishness here: the film doesn’t lapse into sugary sentimentality, and all the better for it. Not to mention the quality of the staging, framing and settings: between rural Ireland and urban New York City, the contrasts are striking and magnificent! A must-see!
