A young man died last week while attempting to take a selfie on the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. The latter slipped, causing a fatal fall several hundred metres below.

The tragedy occurred on Friday, January 4 at 3:15pm. The young man, an Indian national, had moved to Ireland to study at Dublin University. He had gone to the Cliffs as a tourist, and intended to continue his exploration of Ireland…

Unfortunately, the young man skidded before falling as he tried to immortalize the moment with a selfie taken with his smartphone.

The Irish coastguard immediately dispatched a boat and a helicopter to try to repatriate the young man. On arrival at the scene, the emergency services immediately searched the area where the fall had been observed. The victim, who died on impact, was quickly located and pronounced dead on arrival at the rescue station.

A spokesman for the Irish police has already ruled out homicide:

From initial indications, and after taking statements from numerous people, it would appear that the victim was taking a selfie and slipped.

A tragic incident that is causing controversy in Ireland. An opportunity to point out the dangers of selfies, when taken in high-risk locations. (Pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, bridges, cliffs, etc.).

We therefore recommend that you exercise extreme caution when visiting Ireland’s highest points, such as the Cliffs of Moher. Not all of the site is equipped with guardrails, so care must be taken. Also, avoid getting too close, as the wind or vertigo can throw you off balance. Always hold your children by the hand, avoid jokes or risky behavior… And above all: avoid dangerous photos and selfies: accidents can happen!
