It’s a very special position for which Kit Adams, a Northern Irishman from County Down, has just signed up. The latter has decided to take up the post of letter carrier in Antarctica, at the port of Lockroy on Goudier Island, a small island no bigger than a soccer pitch!
Assisted by 4 other colleagues, his mission will be to process over 80,000 postcards sent by tourists arriving on cruises, all stopping briefly on the island to mark their passage by writing a little letter to their loved ones.
A pharaonic task, especially when you consider that the island has no electricity or running water (and it’s -30°C!)!
Kit Adams will spend the next 4 months there from November 2019 to March 2020.
As well as handling local mail, the 26-year-old Northern Irishman will also be responsible for overseeing the daily lives of 2,000 local penguins, and giving talks about Antarctica on board tourist cruises. It’s a program that could well inspire thousands of budding adventurers!
I’ve already blocked the Christmas date to spend it there. I’ll be living it alongside my team and 2,000 penguins. It will certainly be something to remember! he declared. Polar places are something that fascinate me. It’s a unique environment! Very few people can go there, let alone spend such an important period of time being part of the environment and being able to pass on fragments of knowledge. I think I’m going to like it.
What about you? Would you be willing to give it a try?
