Killian’s (also known as George Killian’s) is an Irish red ale found in most Irish pubs. Nicknamed Killian’s Irish Red, this beer is a hit with fans of light, subtly flavored beers…
Killian’s was born in 1864, when an Irish family of the same name decided to start brewing a new red ale. The family recipe is developed in the Enniscorthy brewery, then mass-produced…
From then on, the beer was a great success, being served in most Irish pubs, and even exported around the world… However, the brewery’s financial health was not at its best in the late 50s, and it went bankrupt in 1975…
Fortunately for the company, it was bought out the same year by Pelforth, a subsidiary of the giant Heineken, which decided to brew the beer in France… while preserving the Irish beer-making processes!
With a view to exporting the brand worldwide, in 1981 Heineken granted Coors the use of the brand for the American market…
Killian’s is aimed above all at consumers weary of traditional Irish stouts, often considered too bitter… This beer plays on the finesse and subtlety of its aromas, preferring sweeter, lighter, almost vegetal tones… A rather surprising beverage, in fact, and a radical departure from the dark beers to which Ireland has accustomed us!
It’s easy to find in Irish pubs and supermarkets in France, where it’s available in glass bottles…
