This controversially named cocktail is a blend of lager and dark beer. Not to be ordered in Ireland, to avoid offending the Irish!

If you’re a fan of beer and Irish culture, you may have heard of the Black and Tans cocktail. Yet this mix of light and dark beers has cultural and historical implications that go far beyond the simple pleasure of tasting. Let’s take a closer look at this cocktail and what it really means.

Taste the Black and Tans cocktail

One drink, two stories

The Black and Tans cocktail is both simple and complex. Recipe-wise, it’s pretty basic: half pale ale (usually a Pale Ale) and half dark ale (like a Guinness). Yet its name evokes painful memories for many Irish people, as “Black and Tans” was also the nickname given to British paramilitary forces during the Irish War of Independence.

This militia is infamous for having been one of the most violent in Irish history. Blacks and Tans soldiers shot all Irish suspected of being independence rebels without trial. The number of houses burnt down, women and children murdered and raped is countless…

The Black and Tans were a veritable reign of terror at the time… and the Irish bore the brunt of their barbarity.

A delicious but controversial cocktail

So you see. Ordering a Black and Tans (like an Irish Car Bomb, another controversial cocktail) in a pub in Ireland can be considered a cultural blunder due to the historical connotations of the name. So it’s crucial to understand the context before venturing out to order one.

In other countries, the cocktail is appreciated above all for its balance of flavors: the bitterness of Pale Ale blends with the creamy sweetness of Guinness to create a unique taste experience.

When and where to enjoy a Black and Tans?

If you want to try a Black and Tans, we recommend you do so in a context that respects its complex history. It’s an excellent choice for beer lovers who want to explore different flavor combinations, but always with some awareness of its historical context.
