MUSIC – Ed Sheeran has paid tribute to Irish culture by adapting one of his biggest hits, “Thinking Out Loud”, into Irish Gaelic! With his grandparents living in Ireland, the British-born singer has always made a point of claiming his Irish roots!

And all means are good! So it’s not unusual to see Ed Sheeran accompanying a piece of music on the bodhràn (a famous Irish percussion instrument), or singing traditional songs, just for fun.

This time, it’s “Thinking Out Loud” that goes into the pot, becoming “Ag Smaoineamh Os Ard”. This new version of the song is quite pleasing to the ear, and should feature on the CEOL 2016 albulm. It’s a sort of compilation of the year’s greatest hits, covered in Gaelic. This album was then distributed to many Irish schools. A way of perpetuating the tradition of a centuries-old language, despite the official use of English in the country!

A great initiative from Ed Sheeran! But we’ll have to wait a little longer before we can hear this cover in Gaelic…
