The stone walls of Wicklow Gaol are not what usually spring to mind when thinking of the festive season. The town’s former prison will nevertheless host Christmas at Wicklow Gaol in 2026, an event combining a Christmas market, a Victorian atmosphere and family experiences. The courtyard becomes a meeting place for stalls, treats and visitors, while a heated marquee allows the outing to continue under cover.

In Wicklow Town, this event offers an original stop during a winter stay on the east coast. Several experiences must nevertheless be distinguished: browsing the market, meeting Santa, attending the workshops and going to the cinema do not have the same access conditions.

Christmas in Wicklow’s former prison

A historic monument hosting a new event

The history of Wicklow Gaol began in 1702, when construction of the original prison started. Enlarged in the 19th century, the institution lived through the rebellions, the Great Famine and the conflicts linked to Irish independence, before finally closing as a prison in 1924. Its cells tell stories of poverty, political imprisonment and deportation to penal colonies.

This history gives the site an atmosphere very different from that of a shopping square. Here, the festive season is a seasonal programme held in a place of remembrance. If you would also like to explore the historical trail, plan that visit separately: access to the market should not be taken as a ticket for every part of the prison.

The 2026 event is billed as a new event at Wicklow Gaol. To get there, make a note of the Kilmantin Hill address. Previous references to a market at The Murrough or another site do not automatically correspond to this event.

Exploring the Christmas market

Gifts and handmade products in the courtyard

The exhibitors focus on Christmas gifts, crafts and food products. Applications open to makers and producers suggest a stroll centred on small finds rather than simply a succession of familiar shops. The final selection may nevertheless vary by date, so it is best not to come for a particular trader without checking whether they will be there.

When choosing a souvenir, take the time to ask where it comes from and how it was made. Talking to the exhibitor will often give you a better understanding of a material or technique. Also think about transport: fragile or bulky items require extra care if you are continuing your journey afterwards.

The market is an appealing outing even without booking an experience with Santa. You can make it a stop during a day in Wicklow Town and decide how much time to spend there once you arrive.

Planning a break between the stalls

Alternating between browsing and taking a break makes the visit more enjoyable, particularly with young children. Before ordering, take a first look around to compare what is on offer and identify what suits everyone. For allergies or specific dietary requirements, ask the sellers directly.

Bring a waterproof jacket and footwear suitable for wet ground. The presence of covered areas does not turn the entire route into an indoor visit. A small bag that leaves your hands free will also make it easier to get around and keep your purchases dry.

Christmas at Wicklow Gaol family experiences

Meeting a Victorian Santa

The programme includes a Victorian Santa experience, with a short festive activity, a family meeting and a gift for every child or baby. It must be booked within an arrival window: check the time slot shown on your confirmation carefully, as well as the tickets required for each accompanying adult.

If this meeting is the main reason for your visit, book it first. You can then fit your market visit around it, allowing time for parking and arrival. The first weekend of the market does not yet include this experience: detailed dates are provided in the practical information.

Creative workshops and cinema evenings

Decoration workshops and cinema evenings complete the programme on certain dates. They require separate bookings: a ticket for a meeting with Santa does not automatically include the other activities.

For an outing with several children, choose an activity that matches their interests rather than filling your schedule with multiple time slots. A market, one booked experience and a break are often enough to make an enjoyable half-day. Any details still awaiting confirmation should be checked on the official Christmas at Wicklow Gaol programme before making a purchase.

Planning your visit

A calendar spread over five weekends

The market is scheduled for five weekends between late November and December, with Friday openings during only part of the period. It is therefore not an activity available every day until Christmas. The start and end dates define the limits of the event, but do not replace checking the specific day you have chosen.

Allow around one to two hours for browsing and having something to eat, adapting this to how busy it is and to your own pace. Allow extra time if you have booked an activity. This is organisational advice, not a duration imposed by the event.

Accessibility to check before you visit

The market is only partially accessible. The organiser points out difficulties caused by the stones and gravel in the courtyard. The historical trail, meanwhile, includes stairs, narrow passages and changes in level. Contact the venue before booking if you use a wheelchair or have specific mobility requirements.

Ask for details about the exact route of the experience you are considering rather than a general answer about the building. This is also useful with a pushchair: knowing which passages are accessible makes it easier to organise your outing.

How to get to Wicklow Gaol

Kilmantin Hill as your destination

The event takes place at Wicklow’s Historic Gaol, 1 Kilmantin Hill, in Wicklow Town. The county name alone is not enough to plan your journey: make sure your transport takes you to Wicklow town and check the final route to the monument.

If you are driving, find out where to park before setting off and allow extra time on the busiest days. If you are arriving by public transport, also check your return journey before booking an evening activity. A Christmas outing is more relaxing when the end of the day remains compatible with the journey planned.

Extending your outing in Wicklow

Combining the market with an exploration of the town

Take the opportunity to explore Wicklow Town, its shops and its coastal surroundings. A walk during the brighter part of the day followed by the market allows you to vary the atmosphere without turning the excursion into a race between several sites.

For a longer stay, our guide to County Wicklow can help you choose other stops. In winter, limit detours before making a booking: a scenic route or an additional stop can easily take longer than expected.
