From Kinsale’s quays, the harbour appears almost enclosed by its hills. For the crews taking part in the Sovereign’s Cup, it opens out onto four days of racing. You can come to follow the standings or simply watch the yachts head out to sea, with one useful question to answer before choosing your viewpoint: where will the fleet be racing that day?
The Sovereign’s Cup is held every two years in Kinsale, County Cork. The Kinsale Yacht Club organised the first edition in 1995 and had 95 boats entered in 2025. The June event is separate from the Kinsale Regatta Festival, which brings the harbour to life around the August bank holiday weekend.
To understand what is happening on the water, choose one fleet rather than trying to follow all the boats at once. Watch how the crews position themselves before the start, then how they tack as they sail upwind. The yachts do not necessarily all race on the same course. In 2025, the club had published separate instructions for the Jeanot Petch races; this is an example of the type of information to look for in the sailing instructions.
The Kinsale Yacht Club has confirmed the 17th edition, from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 June 2027. Michael O’Sullivan returns as regatta director, with Anthony O’Leary overseeing the racing on the water. The detailed timings and racing areas still need to be checked in the 2027 announcements. The official regatta notice board still contains the 2025 documents: check the year before relying on a course or timetable.
The quays are a good place to start if you want to see the boats getting ready or moving around the harbour, without getting in the way of manoeuvres at the pontoons. For a view of the channel entrance, the area around Charles Fort offers a different perspective. Neither of these locations guarantees a view of a start or a whole race: visibility depends on the racing area. If you only have half a day, check the club’s latest instructions and bring binoculars rather than moving randomly from one quay to another.
