Every autumn, strange creatures take over the streets of Galway. Monumental puppets, musicians, dancers and characters drawn from Irish folklore make their way through the city to the beat of drums: welcome to the Macnas Halloween Parade, one of Ireland’s most spectacular Halloween events.
In 2026, the parade will take on particular significance. Macnas will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a new show entitled Fiáin, an Irish word that can be translated as ‘wild’. The parade is scheduled for Sunday 25 October 2026 and will be free to attend.

The Macnas Halloween Parade usually attracts tens of thousands of spectators. The narrower streets in the city centre can therefore become particularly crowded.
Once the 2026 route has been published, identify a sufficiently open area in advance and try to arrive between 60 and 90 minutes before the parade is due to pass. Families with young children may prefer to avoid the busiest junctions and particularly narrow streets.
Do not follow the floats or cross the road between the different tableaux. The giant puppets need plenty of space to move, while some structures may be accompanied by technical vehicles that are difficult to see in the dark.
The parade is generally held in the late afternoon or early evening to make the most of nightfall. It is advisable to check the official time shortly before the event.
The main parade is a free street performance. However, no ticket guarantees a particular spot along the route: spectators are free to choose their position, subject to available space.
