History of Connemara
The homeland of the Gaeltacht

Before exploring Connemara further, it is important to know that the region is one of the largest strongholds of the Gaeltacht (which means “Gaelic country” in Irish). In other words: Connemara is an area still strongly attached to its heritage: Irish Gaelic is still spoken there (in addition to English), and the population still lives according to ancestral Irish traditions.
So it will not be surprising to encounter some Irish people speaking Gaelic along your way!
Among other subtleties of Connemara, know that the region has incredible peat bogs. These are natural expanses formed of decomposing organic matter. This allows the population to extract a highly valuable material: peat. It is used, among other things, as fuel for heating fireplaces and can also be used in the distillation processes of Irish whiskey.
Also note that the region has specialized in sheep farming and has a great reputation in the equestrian field. Indeed, the Connemara pony is bred here, an Irish horse resulting from successive crossings between horses of various breeds and Irish horses. Highly prized by the international equestrian community, this horse has many qualities that allow it to thrive in particularly hostile and precarious environments (similar to Connemara).
Finally, Connemara is somewhat the homeland of artisanal smoked salmon! There is even a smokehouse on site where you can visit the establishment, discover their smoking processes, and buy their local products. An extraordinary tasting experience awaits.

If Connemara is so famous worldwide, it is not only because of Michel Sardou’s song. The region is primarily known globally for the incredible beauty of its landscapes.
Here in Connemara: Man becomes very small, giving way to vast spaces, wild nature, dark mountains, thick and mysterious forests, deep lakes, and vast stretches of reddish moorland… Not to mention its immense peat bogs, where it is not uncommon to meet an Irishman harvesting peat by hand.
Due to its lush nature, Connemara experiences a rather harsh climate, exposed to wind and constant humidity, which makes this region so wild and challenging. A green region, but also one with astonishing colors: with its bare brown mountains, light rocky areas, glowing moorland, and expanses of grass in a green shade found nowhere else! It feels like being alone on Earth, away from all civilization!
