At Westport Estate, Christmas shopping feels like a day out in the countryside. Beneath a festive decorated stretch tent, exhibitors bring together gifts, handmade goods and treats, close to Gracy’s Pizzeria, Bar & Bistro. The Westport Estate Christmas Markets offer a seasonal stop on the estate, which you can explore with a simple stroll between the stalls or combine with a pre-booked family experience.
When planning your 2026 visit, one distinction matters more than any other: the market and Winter Wonderland have separate calendars. Dates for the Santa experience do not guarantee that traders will be present. This guide covers the market; nearby attractions are included to help you choose your day out.
The estate is moving its Christmas event to a new area. The market will be held beneath an outdoor stretch tent, close to the festive village and Gracy’s. Do not therefore follow the route from an earlier edition without checking, or assume that activities are taking place inside the historic house.
Westport House is not part of the 2026 event. Redevelopment work is under way in several areas of the estate, and the house will remain closed during Winter Wonderland. If you already know the site, plan this visit as a new outing, checking the access point shown on your booking or in the market information.
This location makes it possible to plan a trip to Westport without spending the whole day at the estate. The town, quays and restaurants can round off your stay, depending on the weather and how much time you have.
The stalls showcase handmade gifts, craft products and seasonal goods. The selection varies from day to day: an exhibitor you see one weekend may not necessarily be there the next. If you are coming for a particular brand or maker, check whether they will be attending before choosing your date.
For visitors, this variety is above all an invitation to look around and chat. Ask how an item is made, where its materials come from and how it should be cared for. These are often the details that turn a personal memento into something more than a quick purchase between two activities.
Also keep the rest of your journey in mind. A fragile gift may need suitable packaging, while food products require you to check their storage conditions. The space available in your suitcase is another useful factor when choosing between two favourites.
The market also offers food and drink. Gracy’s, located nearby, provides additional dining options. You can choose between a quick stop during your stroll and a more leisurely meal, depending on how busy it is.
If you would like a table at the restaurant, remember to book it separately. If you are eating from the stalls, have a look around first; this lets you compare the options and find something suitable for everyone. Anyone with allergies should ask directly about the ingredients and preparation conditions.
The market can be explored freely. Winter Wonderland is a pre-booked family experience: the programme includes a meeting with Santa, stories with Mrs Claus, a festive train and a carousel. The fact that these activities are nearby does not mean they are included with a stroll around the stalls.
For a day out with children, first decide what the main part of the day will be. If meeting Santa is your priority, book that time slot and fit the market around it, provided both are open on the same day. If you are mainly coming for the gifts and atmosphere, there is no need to build your day around every attraction.
The organiser also offers a Sensory Santa session, designed to provide a calmer welcome, with adjustments and reduced attendance. It is part of Winter Wonderland, not the market’s regular calendar.
Before booking, explain your family’s needs to the team. A general description does not make it possible to know whether the route will suit every child; details about sounds, lights, transitions and opportunities to take a break make the choice easier.
The market’s official page announces openings on Saturdays and Sundays. Some listings show a broader calendar corresponding to Winter Wonderland. To avoid travelling there when no traders are present, use the market’s detailed list in the practical information below.
One to two hours is a comfortable amount of time to browse the stalls and take a break, or longer if you add a meal or a pre-booked activity. This is only an estimated visit time: adapt it to your own pace and how busy it is.
The tent protects part of the market, but the visit still has the character of a winter outdoor outing. Wear several layers, a waterproof jacket and shoes suitable for wet ground. With young children, allow time to warm up rather than moving from one activity to the next without a break.
If you use a wheelchair or pushchair, or have particular mobility needs, contact the estate before visiting. Ask about the current route between the car park, the stalls and any pre-booked experience. As the site has been rearranged, this check is more useful than relying on a description based on an earlier visit.
The estate is located in Westport, County Mayo. Do not confuse arriving in the town with being dropped off in front of the traders: identify the final route and the entrance to use before setting off. If you are driving, follow the event signs rather than trying to go directly to Westport House.
If you are arriving by public transport, check how you can reach the estate and get back after your visit. A timed booking also requires some leeway for your arrival. Up-to-date directions can be found on the official Christmas Markets page.
An overnight stay lets you spread the market visit, exploring Westport and an evening at a restaurant across your trip without constantly watching the time for your return journey. The town centre and quayside offer two different atmospheres to include in your plans, depending on your accommodation and how you are getting around.
To choose your other stops, see our guide to Westport. If you combine the market with Winter Wonderland, also check the experience details on its dedicated page: these are two separate calendars that need to be cross-checked before booking.
