The Irish are specialists when it comes to fruitcake. And Irish Apple Cake is one of them!
A clever blend of apples, walnuts and cinnamon, this cake is a classic of Irish cuisine. Often enjoyed at teatime, it goes perfectly with a little whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Many Irish patisseries offer this type of cake for less than €2 a slice.

Recipe: Irish Apple Cake
Ingredients
- 150g caster sugar
- 150g flour
- 30cl milk
- 80g chopped walnuts
- 70g softened butter
- 4 Granny Smith apples, diced
- 1 egg
- 1 sachet vanilla sugar
- 1 sachet baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 200°C
- In a bowl, whiten the butter and sugar.
- Add egg, apples, walnuts, milk and vanilla.
- Add the remaining ingredients and mix until smooth. Top up with milk or flour if necessary. The whole should be slightly thick.
- Transfer the dough to a buttered baking tin and bake for 45 minutes.
- Once cooked, don’t hesitate to pan-fry for a few minutes.
- Serve hot, with whipped cream.
