The referendum ruling on allowing same-sex marriage in Ireland is fast approaching, and is scheduled for May 22, 2015. With this deadline looming, the question on everyone’s lips is: will Ireland make the grade and follow the same model as its French neighbor?

Faced with such an event, artist Joe Caslin decided to raise awareness of the issue in Ireland by plastering a portrait of a female couple on a private Irish castle.

It’s a first, and it’s causing quite a stir among the local population! The castle in question is Caherkinmonwee Castle, a 15th-century castle in County Galway. With the agreement of the building’s owner, the artist began his creation, presenting 2 women, one leaning against the back of the other. The portrait is soft, in white and gray.

For the artist, the painting is intended to“show the love, and equality that people should feel no matter what relationship they’re in“.

The 14-meter-high painting is mounted on the wall of the château, using a biodegradable potato-based glue that won’t damage the building. A symbolic act, reminding us that Ireland is a modern country that knows how to reconcile past and future.
