The small Irish village of Glengarriff is currently at the heart of a puzzling controversy. After installing a tribute statue of actress Maureen O’Hara… the village was forced to remove it two days after its inauguration… The reason: the statue bears no resemblance whatsoever to the famous Irish actress… which has provoked outcry and indignation among local residents!
Don’t touch the famous Irish actress Maureen O’Hara! Considered a monument to cinema the world over, it is above all a source of pride for the Irish! And what better way to celebrate her talent than by installing a statue of her in Glengarriff, West Cork… the village where she is said to have spent her last years in Ireland!
A laudable intention, which soon came under criticism and disparaging remarks… when residents noticed that the sculpture in no way matched the Hollywood icon!
The web quickly went into overdrive, with residents taking to social media to share their frustrations with the Maureen O’Hara statue. Many clearly expressed their belief that the statue was an injustice to the Irish-American actress’s beauty.
For many, the statue is closer to a banshee, or a woman of some sort… and would even be an insult to the American-Irish actress.
So, after just two days, the bronze statue had to be removed… with no real explanation.
Since then, theories have been rife on social networks: will the sculpture be recast to match Maureen O’Hara’s incredible beauty? Has the project been completely abandoned? For now, the questions remain… and the tribute to the great Hollywood actress will have to wait…
