December 21, 2009 was a sad day for Dublin: a fire broke out in the famous Guinness Brewery, causing the evacuation of over 700 people and injuring 2 firefighters…

The worst-hit area was a storage warehouse: the fire started when the warehouse was empty. Very soon, thick black smoke was reportedly rising from the Guinness factory on St James Gates, causing concern among Dubliners… Firefighters then landed as quickly as possible to bring the flames under control: they were brought under control within 3 hours, causing only minor injuries to 2 firefighters, following the inhalation of toxic ammonia-based vapours.

Fortunately, the toll of the disaster was low: only the warehouse where the fire started was affected, and the rest of the factory of the famous Irish beer brand was untouched. What’s more, its production has not even been affected.

In the end, 500 brewery employees were evacuated, along with 200 local residents. An investigation is currently underway to determine whether or not the fire was caused by arson…

One thing’s for sure: the Guinness Toucan was hot!
