Heatwave in Ireland: concerns over possible water shortage

Hot weather in Ireland! With the country currently experiencing the highest temperatures of the year, the national water company “Irish Water” has voiced its concern about current water reserves.
The company fears a real water shortage as a result of the current intense heat. Temperatures could cause a real drought in local rivers and lakes, dangerously drying up Ireland’s drinking water reservoirs.
According to specialists, some reservoirs are already in a serious situation, reaching extremely low levels worthy of those recorded in 1975, 1976 and 1995.

Faced with this potential shortage, Irish Water issued a nationwide press release to raise awareness of water consumption. Among the instructions, the Irish were asked to :

  • avoid watering their gardens
  • avoid cleaning their cars
  • short showers instead of baths
  • avoid leaving tap water running for nothing
  • etc…

These measures, if complied with, should enable Irish Water to maintain a fragile balance between water resources and current high demand.
A worrying and unusual situation for Ireland, which is more used to too much water than too little!

In any case, the situation will have to be monitored throughout the summer, as Irish Water fears an unusually hot season.
