INSOLITE – 2000-year-old butter found in Ireland!
La motte de beurre découverte

INSOLITE – It may seem an astonishing find: a lump of butter over 2,000 years old was discovered by a farmer in Ireland this week! The latter was discovered in the Emlagh peat bog in the town of Drakerath, County Meath, north of Dublin City.

The lump of butter found would be quite impressive, both in age and size! It’s huge, oval-shaped, very fragrant and weighs over 10 kilos! A real find, but one that has raised many questions in the scientific community!

The mound was obviously deliberately buried in the bog. An offering, perhaps, to the gods: a common practice at the time.
According to specialists, this butter would have survived the centuries thanks to the peat bog in which it would have remained. The high acidity of the soil, coupled with its low oxygen content, is thought to have helped preserve this lump of butter to the present day.

The motte is already the subject of scientific research and surveys. Researchers hope to learn more about the techniques used to produce this famous butter.

A veritable archaeological treasure trove, promising yet more historical and scientific discoveries!
