This summer’s high temperatures caused a terrible forest fire in the east of Ireland, ravaging the coast for more than ten kilometers.
The fire burned mountain slopes not far from Bray Head, in County Wicklow, south of Dublin.

This rather bitter observation nevertheless led to a strange discovery: the fire revealed a giant inscription on the ground in the middle of nowhere, forming the word “EIRE”.
The word, meaning Ireland in Gaelic, is said to date from the Second World War, and was formed at the time by the use of imposing stones.

The aim was to inform both the Allies and the Germans that they were flying over neutral Ireland. A way of avoiding attacks and bombings by mistake.

The inscription was identified after the fire by the Irish Air Force, who were quick to share the discovery on the Internet and social networks.
Other similar inscriptions can be found all over the country. However, it had never been identified before…
