It’s a real 360-degree turnaround for the Irish: while water was previously free for domestic households, a new law will now oblige Irish people to pay their drinking water bills. This law, which officially comes into force in January 2015, is part of the rescue plan negotiated in November 2010. Considering free water in Ireland to be unfair to other EU countries, Brussels put pressure on the Emerald Isle to reintroduce tariffed water consumption.

But this measure is currently drawing the ire of the Irish people. Compelled to install water meters, Irish people took to the streets this month to protest against the new practice. According to the government, the average bill for a 4-person household will be equivalent to €280 a year. A sum that has sparked anger among the Irish people hardest hit by the crisis and the current austerity measures…
