The WHO has just published a study showing that Ireland is one of the best places to grow old. This distinction is justified by the growing number of over-65s living in Ireland, and by the generally healthy standard of living observed on the Emerald Isle.
For it’s a fact: Ireland’s overall population has been aging more and more since the 1980s. The over-65 demographic group having increased by 19% between 2011 and 2016.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) even predicts that in just 30 years, the number of people aged 65 and over will have risen from 629,800 – the figure recorded in 2016 – to around 1.6 million! A real grandma and grandpa boom, with more and more Irish people over the age of 80!
Faced with such an explosion, the Ireland-Friendly Age program was launched. Set up 10 years ago, the program supports the elderly by facilitating their day-to-day lives and their access to local facilities. Supermarkets, airports, access to healthcare, access to culture, caregivers: everything is in place to keep the elderly within the Irish community and support them on a daily basis!
For the WHO, this type of initiative, coupled with a healthy local lifestyle, helps to improve the lives of the elderly and promote longevity. What’s more, the tranquility of some of Ireland’s towns and villages, as well as the country’s wild, natural setting between the mountains and the ocean, would be the perfect place to end your days.
The island therefore offers a favorable environment for staying healthy, enjoying healthy air and quality food, while benefiting from appropriate support to help you age peacefully. It’s sure to give some people ideas about spending their retirement in Ireland!
