It’s a big step forward for Ireland, which enacted same-sex marriage on Thursday, 5 months after a historic referendum in which 62% of Irish people voted in favor of gay marriage! A historic decision, and excellent news for gay couples, who will be able to marry in Ireland in the coming weeks.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has reportedly already mooted the possibility of getting married in mid-November!
A major step forward for Irish society, which had previously been deeply divided on the issue. Ireland has always been a conservative Catholic country, opposed to gay marriage. Homosexuality was long considered a crime, and was only decriminalized in 1993.
The promulgation of gay marriage has become a major sign for Irish society, loudly proclaiming its desire to bring Ireland into a progressive, modern era. Some government leaders have no intention of stopping there, and are already planning to tackle another equally controversial issue: abortion rights. As a reminder, abortion in Ireland is prohibited by the 8th Amendment to the Constitution. It is only authorized when the medical profession can declare that the mother’s life is in danger.
