This event highlights the unpredictability of the weather in Ireland, a country more often associated with constant rainfall than tornadoes. Although tornadoes are rare in Ireland, this incident is a reminder that extreme weather conditions can occur at any time, and are a direct consequence of current climate disruption.
Also, local politicians and safety organizations said it would be interesting to work on a warning system to better prepare for this kind of climatic event. Advance detection of a tornado would enable people to be informed a few minutes in advance, so they could take effective shelter.
For the moment, the village of Leitrim is taking stock of the damage. The insurance companies are already hard at work, and the streets are being cleared. A very sad event just a few days before Christmas…
