Clifden (An Clochán in Gaelic) is a charming little town in Connemara, Ireland. Highly popular with tourists in summer, it attracts thousands of visitors every year to explore the town center, its colorful houses and the wonders of Connemara. It’s the perfect place to base your explorations: spend the night and discover the surrounding area during the day!

History of Clifden

A town famous for its old telegraph station

Clifden is said to have been founded by John d’Arcy in the 19th century, and only really took off in the 20th century, when Guglielmo Marconi installed a wireless telegraph station. A first for the time and the region!

This telegraph station enabled the town to become a major telecommunications center.

Clifden’s location is perfect: right in the heart of Connemara, it’s the perfect base from which to sleep in and explore the region’s wonders over several days.
