Did you know? It’s not just in Scotland that people start imagining the existence of a terrible lake monster! In Ireland, too, many locals claim to have observed the appearance of a kind of Irish Loch Ness monster… Testimonies are still multiplying today, and the first ones date back more than 150 years!
It’s well known that Ireland is a land of myths and legends… And there’s only one step between reality and fantasy: truth and mystery sometimes merge, blurring the lines of scientific explanation.
The proof is in the mysterious myth of the Irish sea serpent, often dubbed “the Irish Loch Ness monster”. The creature was first spotted by local residents off the coast of County Clare in the late 1850s…
They described it as a huge sea serpent, its head protruding several meters from the surface of the water. According to the testimony, the creature appeared to be sunbathing near the Clare coast, off Kilkee.
Its atypical shape created awe and astonishment among observers of the scene, and was widely reported in the press at the time.
However, there has never been a real scientific explanation for this phenomenon… Was it a hallucination? A simple lie to attract attention? Or a real apparition?
We still don’t know what’s going on… But the testimonials didn’t stop there.
Other people would have encountered this monster in September 1871. The Limerick Chronicle then published an article about “a large and frightening sea monster”, encountered by a group of people, who “had all their nerves considerably shaken by the appalling appearance of this extraordinary creature”.
This sighting also took place on the Kilkee side. A group of men and women staying there, including a clergyman, were walking around Diamond Rocks.
Suddenly, their attention was arrested by the appearance of an extraordinary monster, which rose from the surface of the water some seventy meters from where they were standing.
It had a huge head, shaped somewhat like a horse, while behind the head and on the neck was a huge mane of water resembling seaweed; the eyes were large and bright, and, by the appearance of the water behind, a vast body seemed to be beneath the waves.
An account that describes a beast straight out of Greek or Celtic mythology, and which has been fueling passions ever since!
Nowadays, there are few sightings of this kind. The last testimony dates back to May 2013, when a group of students took a photo of a strange sea serpent of impressive proportions in the waters of the River Foyle!

The Loch Ness Monster in Ireland
While some thought it was a hoax, others thought it might be the monster seen in Kilkee, which had migrated without explanation to the Foyle River…
In any case, many scientists and Irishmen are scouring the waters off Kilkee and La Foyle in an attempt to find this amazing Irish Loch Ness monster…
Is he still alive? Or was it just a myth? One thing’s for sure: the mystery is still unsolved, and it’s still causing theories to run riot among Kilkee’s residents!
