The Irish press is all over him: Leo Varadkar will officially be Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland within the next few days. Nicknamed “the Irish Macron”, the young man is blowing a new wind into Ireland. Firstly, because of his atypical profile: at 38, he will be the youngest leader in the country’s history. But there’s more: of Indian origin, the politician has never hidden his homosexuality.

This atypical profile contrasts sharply with Ireland’s current image as an ultra-conservative country. (Homosexual relations were decriminalized only 24 years ago, and abortion is still banned in Ireland today).

Is a new wind blowing across Ireland? That’s what the country’s political experts seem to think.

A Prime Minister with such a profile would have been unthinkable just twenty years ago, when Leo Varadkar joined Fine Gael as a young activist. said Gary Murphy.

A bearer of hope and new ambitions, Leo Varadkar seems to be part of a new movement, in which he intends to “make things happen”, and “carry forward the values and interests of the Republic of Ireland”. A speech full of hope for an Ireland in full renewal, which has managed to recover from the turbulence of the economic crisis.

Only time will tell if he succeeds…
