It’s official: there will be a Saint Patrick’s Day in New York in 2022. And it promises to be sensational! It would appear that preparations are well underway: the organization in charge of the event is currently in the midst of planning the big St. Patrick’s Day parade. An event that was eagerly awaited each time, but had to be cancelled twice in a row due to the disruption caused by Covid-19. Never mind: it looks like the 2022 edition will be back with a vengeance!

A St Patrick’s Day parade on 5th Avenue!

New York City intends to revive the festive traditions of St. Patrick’s Day

In a Facebook post on November 2, the event organizers were clear:

This evening, we informed parade-affiliated organizations that we plan to hold a large-scale St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world’s greatest city, New York, on Thursday, March 17, 2022.
We look forward to greeting everyone in 2022 on Fifth Avenue as we celebrate 260 years of the parade (since 1762) on the streets of New York honoring the legacy of St. Patrick, our Irish heritage and culture.

A declaration that delighted the Irish-American diaspora. For the record, although St. Patrick’s Day is primarily an Irish holiday, it is more than widely celebrated in the United States, which has a large population of Irish emigrants.

New York’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is the oldest in the world! Its first edition took place on March 17, 1762! Since then, the magic has never stopped: the big parade is held every year on March 17, and winds its way up Fifth Avenue, starting at East 44th Street and ending at East 79th Street.

Some 150,000 people take part, watched in amazement by over 2 million spectators. And the show is well worth the detour: colorful floats, impressive choreography, costumes, musicians and singers… Tout le Monde parades with one aim: to celebrate Irish culture in all its flamboyance!

From its beginnings to the present day, the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade™ has been run entirely by volunteers, many of whom come from generations of Irish families dedicated to organizing the parade. It takes months of preparation and countless hours to organize the world’s oldest and largest parade.

A colossal task, which should raise the spirits of Americans, tired by the last two years of the pandemic…
