Northern Ireland: a 10-year-old discovers a 300-year-old sword!
Fionntan Hughes présente son épée

Fionntan Hughes is a 10-year-old boy who makes a very strange discovery. He found a rusty sword half-buried while playing with a metal detector given to him by his family. Researchers are convinced that the sword dates back to 1700. A wonderful discovery for this young Northern Irishman, who had never expected to find such a treasure!

A sword unearthed on the banks of the Blackwater

The object is said to be of English origin

Young Hughes never expected to make such a discovery. Testing his metal detector for the first time on the banks of the Blackwater River, he immediately notified his father and cousin, believing he had found an unusual object in the silt.

Noting that the detector beeped when flying over a muddy area, the little boy then dug with his hands to extract an impressive sword. A rust-covered sword with a broken blade and an imposing hilt.

Immediately, the boy’s father contacted Dr Greer Ramsey, archaeological curator at the National Museum of Northern Ireland. They are currently working on the sword, trying to determine its origins. But their studies are likely to take a long time: the sword is heavily covered in rust, making it difficult to identify in detail.

According to specialists, it dates back to 1700 and was the typical weapon used by English officers.

A great find, legally discovered. (For the record, any Northern Irish person who makes an archaeological discovery using a metal detector must contact the relevant authorities in Northern Ireland).

The sword, once studied, will probably be exhibited in the National Museum of Northern Ireland. It’s a proud moment for young Fionntan Hughes, who’s made a discovery worthy of Indiana Jones! We bet he’ll be stepping up his search with his metal detector!
