It’s a turning point for Northern Ireland: marriage for all and abortion have officially been legalized! This is a significant step forward for the British province, which until now has criminalized any attempt at abortion and any wish for marriage between homosexuals.
Both amendments were adopted by Parliament with a significant majority. This would be a “turning point” for social justice activists!
As a reminder, prior to this legalization, only women whose lives were potentially in danger due to their pregnancy were entitled to request termination of their pregnancy. From now on, whatever the reason, any woman wishing to terminate her pregnancy in the first trimester will be able to request an abortion.
As for homosexuals, who were previously denied access to marriage, from now on it will be open to all!
These 2 advances were officially decided by London, as the Northern Irish government was unable to reach an agreement between its various parties. With the Northern Irish executive still not restored, the Westminster government therefore took over and made the legalization official this Monday, October 21, 2019.
These amendments bring Northern Ireland into line with the Republic of Ireland and the rest of the UK, where abortion and gay marriage are already legal.
Northern Ireland now has until March 2020 to install suitable infrastructure. Ongoing legal proceedings will also be discontinued as of today.
