It’s an exceptional show, which now takes place almost every year, colouring the sky with almost supernatural hues! According to specialists, the phenomenon is highly likely to occur this week: all conditions are ripe for an aurora borealis… So keep an eye out for the stars!
Observing the aurora borealis requires a bit of luck… but that’s not all. For specialists, the latter are the result of scientific factors. They only occur when the Earth is disturbed by geomagnetic storms.
Researchers believe that the planet is currently experiencing a geomagnetic storm. We then observe increased magnetic activity, caused by solar winds in the space environment surrounding the Earth. A phenomenon imperceptible to human beings, but which can manifest itself through the aurora borealis… or by disrupting our communications networks.
These are generally concentrated around the Earth’s magnetic poles, producing a greenish-orange glow in the sky. And more often than not, it’s regions like Iceland and Norway that are most at risk. But for some years now, regions such as Northern Ireland, County Donegal (in the Republic of Ireland) and England have been witnessing this type of phenomenon with increasing frequency.
This week, the focus is on the north of England and Northern Ireland. You’ll have to keep your fingers crossed to catch a glimpse: these can only be seen under clear skies… and some are sharper than others.
